Repair Warped Alvin Cutting Mat GM1218

Had a hunch I did, that the warped Alvin cutting mat at Goodwill could be repaired, and I was right. The mat seemed to have some smooth but pretty funky curves and did not sit flat. I baked it!

The Alvin cutting mat is pretty thick, so simply bending it would probably break it. After some Google research I tried the oven reheat solution. Here it is:

  1. Need: 2 cookie sheets that are larger than the cutting mat, 1 large cast iron pot with a cover, metal or glass cake container to fill with water, oven, warped Alvin cutting mat
  2. Add water to metal or glass cake container, about 2″ deep, place on lower shelf of oven
  3. Place warped cutting mat on a baking sheet, place second baking sheet on top, flattening like a sandwich. Place the cast iron pot top on top of the top baking sheet. Note do not add the cast iron pot on at this point or the cutting sheet might break
  4. Preheat oven to 200F
  5. Place cookie trays, cutting mat and cast iron top into oven for 5 minutes. The cutting sheet will soften
  6. Using oven gloves, remove the cast iron top and replace with the cast iron pot. Be careful of the oven elements as they are hot. Heat for 5 minutes or until the cutting mat is flat.
  7. turn oven off, wait 10 minutes or longer. I let the oven cool down on its own, which allows the cutting mat to cool at a slow speed.
  8. When the cookie sheets and cast iron pot is cool, remove. Your cutting mat will be flat.

Is it really that easy? Yes, it is.
