This test list was developed for my niece in China, to help her prepare for her upcoming university English Exam, called the CET-4, or College English Test 4, National College English Teaching Syllabuses (NCETS). You can download it, and use it in a spreadsheet program in order to test students.

There are 3,591 words in this list, quite long. In one sitting you cannot test the complete list. Originally this list was split into 4 sections, which I have merged them into one. I have created the ability to randomize the list, so that every time you use this list you can have a new order. This means that if you review or test 200 words every session you can use the same list but have 200 different words each time. You can give the students the complete list to review, but retain the ability to randomize the list at any time.
Column D generates a random number between 1 and 1000. Load the list into a spreadsheet. I use Libreoffice Calc, but you can use Lotus Symphony spreadsheet or MS Office Excel. I have tested LibreOffice Calc and Lotus Symphony, and they work well.
How to Randomize the List
To randomize . You will see column D change its numbers. Click column D’s header and then copy . Right click on column E, Paste Only, Number. Then sort using column E. I do this because you cannot sort on column D as it is a formula and therefore a calculated field.
Once column E is sorted you will see column D also change. This is because when you do a sort, LibreOffice Calc also redoes all calculations, such as calculating Column D. Therefore you will get new numbers in column D. No matter and not to worry.
Now you can use Column E to test your students. each time you want a newly ordered list, randomize column D, copy to column E, then sort column E. You will get a fresh list.
About the List: While I have gone through and used most of this list, some odd words might be left. I have taken out the heavily religious words, as well as duplicates, and have tried to clean up the list. I could not find a defacto standard word list for the CET anywhere, so cannot verify if this list is complete. The CET-4 is based on 4,000 words, and this list is 3,600 words long.
If you wish to split the list into the original 4 sections, simply sort by column C.
This list is not meant to be used on a smartphone, but on a computer. The spreadsheet software required can run on Ubuntu or Windows. As the .ods format is open source it should work on a Mac.
