When Down Becomes Up and Up Becomes Down

One day you might realize that your down is up and your up is down. At first it is most disorienting. Your head spins at first as your world is violently shaken up like a snow globe, but eventually you accept the reality, or non-reality, of the situation. Acceptance of the situation is the first step to rehabilitation. The alternative is to go crazy.

Having your down become up is most frightening. What you thought was your base has now become your ceiling? This leaves a most unsettling feeling in the gut of your stomach, which, for a long time does not go away.

It really is not at all funny, though after the fact you may chuckle. While reality bends it gives you the queasy feeling, like when you see yourself in a fun house mirror wall, where your head gets larger and smaller. Or is it your body gets smaller and then larger?

The first task is to figure out if your old reality really had a basis of truth. Hopefully you were not living in fantasy and now you are jolted into reality. The next step is to assess your new reality, to see if it is indeed as scary as you feel. Often times the change is a minor one, one that you can easily accommodate. If so, then accommodate. If your new reality is so different from your old, and you feel you cannot change, then you either learn to accept and change slowly, run from your reality, or be stuck in your old reality and fight it.

The latter will put you into a very stressful and possibly futile existence where you cannot win. There are forces, both dark, neutral and good, that are far stronger than you, and to resist might be futile. Fight, yes, but learn to pick them judiciously, when you have advantage. In this way your probability of success is enhanced, though not guaranteed. There are no guarantees given here.

In time, you accept your situation and change your reality from top to bottom and from bottom to top. Sometimes your reality rights itself and you are back where you once where, and at other times you are stuck with your new normal. Over time you may reassess your reality for any changes that you might take advantage. There is swaying in the breeze, to bend like bamboo so as to not break.

What can we do but trudge on and forward.

Oh my goodness … How true. This “down becomes up and the up becomes down” can happen oh so quickly and unexpectedly. One day your world is going along as usual and then the next … I have learned, often the hard way, that a person HAS to learn to bend like bamboo. Personally this bending has kept me from breaking and leaves me feeling a little more settled.
