Two years ago I was thinking about buying my first gas stove. A question we had was “How likely is it that we could blow up our house using a gas stove?” I asked a friend if it was possible to blow up your house using a gas stove. He said it was possible, but highly unlikely.

Indeed, we did buy a Sears gas stove and have been happy with its performance. The stove can get your pot really hot, but with lots of control. I doubt we would go back to an electric stove.

Back to the issue at hand. Yes, you could potentially blow up your house with a gas stove, but it would be extremely difficult. I don’t think that the gas coming out of the stove would be sufficient for a sizable explosion. As well, the natural gas in Canada has an additive that has a noxious smell, alerting you that something is wrong. You could not accidentally blow up your house while using a gas stove, contrary to what you see in the movies.

That being said, you could blow up your house with natural gas. This was proven here in Canada with a house explosion in Toronto this year in June. The home owner disconnected his gas pipe from his hot water tank and had it leak for over 90 minutes before the explosion. That would have filled his house with a sizable amount of natural gas. The stench of the gas would have been unbearable.

Not only did he completely destroy his house, but the 7 houses surrounding his, as well as significant damage to 27 other houses, which are still not repaired.

So no, it is highly unlikely that you could blow up your house with a gas stove. There are safeguards in place to prevent this, namely the small amount of gas used for the stove, as well as the noxious additive that smells really terrible. However, if you really, really want to blow yourself and your house up, if there is a will there is a way. Just not an easy way.
