A year ago Bell decided to install fiber optic on our street. For some reason they had cut squares into the sidewalk, which was filled in with asphalt. This year city contractors broke up and completely removed and replaced the complete sidewalk.

Very simple jig to cut tight dadoes: just a rectangular piece of wood and a metal screw. Photo 1 by Don Tai
Obsessive, I sometimes am, but for getting tight dadoes it is crucial. Without tight dadoes joints are not as strong. I do not have nor cannot justify a dado set, so need to use my single blade. I was going to build a 2 part kerfmaker, when I found this very simple kerfmaker design that uses a single piece of rectangular wood and a screw. Well, I just had to try it. It works exceedingly well, resulting in tight dado joints.
My dear Aunty has an Asus Aspire V3-571G-6602 laptop, Win7 64 bit, 500mb, 4G ram, 5 years old (2012/07/04), Windows 7. She only uses Firefox for her email and for browsing. Windows 10 auto-upgraded, she says, without her permission. Furious was an understatement, when, during the install, Windows 10 froze. No amount of rebooting fixed the problem. Her beloved PC, hardly used, was non-functional. Somehow I let it run and after a very long while it repaired itself and came back to life. Microsoft did not make a friend of my Aunty this week, but hopefully she may warm up later. In the meanwhile she is using my Lubuntu 14.04 on a 13 year old laptop, and she really likes it! I am contemplating installing a dual boot ‘buntu, which she will use on a regular basis, but if she desperately needs Windows she can have it as well.
City of Toronto potential flood area, for a 50 foot or 15.25m rise in water level from Lake Ontario, which occurred in Houston 2017 hurricane Harvey. Map changes by Don Tai
I was wondering, I am sure like many others, what would happen if the City of Toronto had a flood similar in height to Houston 2017 caused by Hurricane Harvey. Who would get flooded and who would remain dry? Is the City of Toronto largely at risk? Are we ready? Unlike Houston, Toronto is not flat. We also do not have hurricanes or tropical storms. That being said, let us try to analyze a topological map of Toronto and see how we would fare. As I live in Scarborough note that Scarborough has the Scarborough bluffs. My area of Scarborough is 235m above sea level. As Lake Ontario is 75m above sea level, we have a buffer of 160m or 525′. I think we are safe from a flood risk.
Delta 36-510C table saw has a terrible fence. The fence clamps to an inclined front area, resulting in an inefficient clamp, which moves when you use it.
I have had my Delta 36-510C table saw for quite a long time. The saw is inexpensive and I had very little money and needed a saw. Little did I know at the time that the table fence that came with the saw was terrible. I’d set up the fence, lock it down as tight as possible, and half way through a cut the fence would jiggle free and mess up my cut. I would end up with cut wood with dimensions slightly off at the end. After 15 years of suffering I decided to research and build a DIY table fence that works, is accurate and stays put despite the vibration of the saw.
Deepin’s Chinese name is 深度科技 shendu keji. Shendu means “to a deep degree”, as in the pool is really deep. keji means technology. I suppose he took the deep part as the name.

A novice canner, I am, so in seeking out answers I am aptly qualified to document my findings. Canning is a food preservation method that uses heat and acidity to preserve foods into glass jars. These jars can stay almost indefinitely without refrigeration. In an age of computers and electricity I find this age old food preparation method quite enlightening. Yes, I am so easily amused.
Why Can?
You really do not use a can, as in a metal can. Canning uses glass bottles with a 2 part metal top: a seal and a ring. Interestingly these products are readily available at our local grocery stores and Walmart. it seems that many people still do can.
I can only label this a Russian referrer bot because it uses predominantly Russian referrers, used for referrer spam. In fact I have no evidence of its origin. The list of 46 unique requesting IPs are from around the world, seemingly random. While it is easy to ban these 43, there is no way to find the originator of this bot.
Referrer spam is unique in that the originating IP does not care about returned data. All the IP request wishes to do is insert their referrer info into the request. This request goes back to and therefore affects and pollutes your Google Analytics. The requesting IPs, not wanting any information in return, could be from anywhere and could well be faked.
We are human, there is no denying this. As technology improves and allows us more convenience this also has disadvantages. Human physiology, which we cannot control, is a force that contributes to our behaviour. The less we need to concentrate on something, the more our mind wanders to other aspects of our lives. This propensity is not something we can control. It is autonomous and a built-in feature of our wonderful minds. That said, there are downsides, especially with safety.
It is no big news that for the majority of the 99% of regular people the last 10 years in North America has been economically tough. Our young have a difficult time finding stable employment. In fact finding stable work has been a challenge for quite a long time. Products from China undercut our domestic manufacturers who have largely gone out of business. Our kids will not have a better life than us. It is clear that larger forces than the Canadian environment are at play here.
