Postel’s Law | Be conservative in what you emit and liberal in what you accept

Also called the Robustness principle, though created for use in the computer field, it has wide implications to life in general.

Jonathan Bruce Postel (/pəˈstɛl/; August 6, 1943 – October 16, 1998) was an American computer scientist who made many significant contributions to the development of the Internet, particularly with respect to standards…

Postel’s law
Perhaps his most famous legacy is from RFC 760, which includes a robustness principle often called Postel’s law: “an implementation should be conservative in its sending behavior, and liberal in its receiving behavior” (reworded in RFC 1122 as “Be liberal in what you accept, and conservative in what you send”). source

No, this is not my ticket. I was on a run and found it on the ground, stuck to some ice. Thankfully it is a plasticized paper, so when I ripped it off the ice it did not rip. In fact, it was in perfect shape. Here in Ontario for a vehicle you need to buy a vehicle number plate, and then yearly also purchase a validation sticker. Apparently you cannot park your vehicle on the street without the validation sticker. I have removed the street name.

The Truth can only be backed by Evidence

Wondering, I am, about the truth in today’s news. US President Trump says something, the press refutes with facts, then he doubles down and continues to insist his version is correct. And this, from a US president. I find it odd that someone of such a high office would do and say such “alternative truths”, as he puts it. Really, there are no alternative truths, only truths backed by evidence. There are different conclusions made from the same original evidence, but no alternative truths. Alternative truths are close to a lie. What do we tell our kids, after years of us espousing everyone to tell the truth, when people in high office begin to lie.

Teach Platy Tropical Fish to eat Vegetables

Eeat they do, after learning that the green wavy thing in their tank is edible, and that it tastes good, too. Yes, young tropical fish need to learn, on their own, that vegetables are edible and good for them. Unfortunately there is little in terms of communications, that one can do to actively teach them. As with my past goldfish, my six platies, 2 males and 4 females, after a few days, have learned on their own. There are a few tips.

Can you Blow up Your House using a Gas Stove?

Two years ago I was thinking about buying my first gas stove. A question we had was “How likely is it that we could blow up our house using a gas stove?” I asked a friend if it was possible to blow up your house using a gas stove. He said it was possible, but highly unlikely.

Indeed, we did buy a Sears gas stove and have been happy with its performance. The stove can get your pot really hot, but with lots of control. I doubt we would go back to an electric stove.

Schlimmbesserung: bad improvements

I really love this word: Schlimmbesserung

It originates from German, Schlimmbesserungen: bad improvements

-making sth. worse by trying to make it better
-An intended improvement that has the opposite effect (the adjective schlimm can mean anything from “bad” to “malicious”; the noun Besserung means “improvement”–literally “betterment”) source

Today there are so many supposed improvements that actually make things worse. There are so many.

For example the Toronto Star changed their online site to a smartphone design. I use a PC and there was so much wasted space that I decided to not go back. Schlimmbesserung strikes again.

Warm Sock Design for Sensitive Skin

Take for granted, we do, something that is, literally, low on the prestige scale of clothing. At least shoes are on the outside, with their shiny leather, and can be seen and noticed. Socks are hidden by pant legs and shoes, far from drawing attention to themselves. In the summer socks are eschewed altogether. How is that for gratitude? This is one downtrodden product. Big Weed has sensitive skin, and when I started making fleece socks she told me the design was all wrong for her. She wanted something she could not buy. I was intrigued.

Looks are deceiving, here in Toronto, Canada. This is recycled soap that I partially melted in a double boiler, cooled, then let sit for a couple of months to get nice and dry. It does look like white milk chocolate with nougat bits, but one bite would tell you otherwise. Most of it is made from Ivory soap!

La Presse journalist Patrick Lagacé Surveilled by Police

La Presse journalist Patrick Lagacé just found out his phone was tapped by Quebec police, one of 7 other Quebec reporters. His meta data and geolocated movement were legally obtained, through 24 court ordered warrants for police surveillance. This is shocking.

DS ()Diana Swain): We’ve focused on journalists, and that’s what we’ve heard about this week. But should Canadians at large be concerned about this? People who are not journalists?

PL (La Presse journalist Patrick Lagacé):
