Opening a Cardinal Watch Case that has no Notch or Raised lip

Cardinal watches has been around for quite a long time. I came across a women’s Cardinal watch, but the watch battery was dead. Frustratingly, the rear bezel has no notch, raised lip or pry area, so opening it in order to replace the battery was difficult. Who would make a watch back like this, that would make changing the battery difficult and dangerous?

2016 Honda Fit Rear Splash Guards Install

Not being one to was the car often, I’ve opted to install rear splash guards. They will keep the rear of the car cleaner, as there will be less splash up of water and snow. The front splash guards came with the car. As all Canadian Fits already come with front splash guards I only had to install the rear ones. I did not need to remove the rear tires to install the splash guards, but did need a really short philips screwdriver. Here in Canada these rear splash guards cost $61CAD for the pair. The quality of the splash guards is quite good. The fit was also great.

Repair Warped Alvin Cutting Mat GM1218

Had a hunch I did, that the warped Alvin cutting mat at Goodwill could be repaired, and I was right. The mat seemed to have some smooth but pretty funky curves and did not sit flat. I baked it!

The Alvin cutting mat is pretty thick, so simply bending it would probably break it. After some Google research I tried the oven reheat solution. Here it is:

2015 2016 Honda Fit: Defects and Remediation

The 2016 Honda Fit is a good car. Overall the car is very suitable for our small family, not too big and not too small. The fuel economy is really good, and the price, while higher than competing subcompacts, was reasonable. That being said, Honda did cut corners on this car to save money and increase fuel economy. If you are considering this car for purchase you should be aware of these cost cutting measures before you purchase. Hang out at the Fit Freak forum to talk with a wide variety of owners. I’ll keep a running tab of defects as time passes.

Learn to Sew Leather from Craftsman Cechaflo

Learning is difficult and always hit and miss. Of course it is best to learn from a competent teacher, but often you do not know anyone with such high credentials. Often I get an interest and learn on my own. You go to the store and ask questions. There are books to read and then you experiment, learning as you go. Of course your results may vary. After lots of projects you might get it right. Really, it is best to find a great teacher.

Ubuntu 14.04, Eclipse 4.4 Luna and Android ADT: The Journey

Easy it will not be, for this path I know will be rocky. I tried installing Eclipse and the Android ADT on Windows 7 and got really stuck. Now that I’m on Ubuntu there is so much more help, but the problems are still many, varied and difficult to solve. I’ll chart the course here.

Win2k Loses USB driver for HP P1005 Laser Printer: Solution

My first thought was “What the hell”? My Win 2k 2000 Printer server has not been touched for a couple of years, and today it started acting up, with a “USB Driver not Found”. What to do?

My HP P1005 Laserjet printer connects to my Win2k PC using USB, which has worked very reliably for years. Today I got messages like “Use Printer offline”, and nothing would print. In device manager I could see the yellow caution sign for USB driver support. What the hell? I had not installed anything on this PC for years.

Ripstik G Design Defects: Do not Buy a G

Kids will be kids, in that they buy stuff, play with stuff, and then eventually break stuff. My job is to repair the stuff they break. Which brings me to the Ripstik casterboard. There are three variations: Classic, Ripster, Ripstik G, and the DLX. My local group, which includes my Little Weed, rides on Classic, G, and DLX models. Two of their G models broke in the same manner, with two different boys, of different weights. My advice for Ripstik buyers is to steer clear of the G model. I apologize to all for y 6 month delay in posting this info, but I was distracted by work.

Little Weed has been Ripstiking on a used Classic for 2 years now. I had just recently found a new Ripstik DLX on Kijiji here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, so I bought it for him. Learning to wheelie, he had been grinding down the tail end of his DLX. I feared, correctly, that the plastic on the ass end of the board was wearing thin and would eventually grind through. We took the rear deck off, designed and fabricated a rear skidplate out of metal. Here is our design.

Lubuntu 14.04 LTS Install on Old Dell Laptop

This old Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, handed down to me because it was really broken, was tired as tired could be. I brought it back to life by eschewing Windows and embracing Lubuntu 14.04 LTS. Now it hums and runs really well. Here are some of my observations.

This Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop has 500mb of Ram, 2 of 4 broken USB ports, and a missing down arrow key. Apparently my mischievous nephew had heard that one of his toys was able to insert into a computer, so he tried this, twice, on this laptop. Two USB ports had sorted out and remain damaged, and Windows XP had crashed hard and was irrecoverable. I tried to rebuild XP, and it was largely successful, but could not configure the wifi to work. XP was slow, and running a browser was painfully slow. In essence it was a dead laptop.
