China’s Salmon..Might be Rainbow Trout

China, for domestic consumption, recently decided to reclassify rainbow trout and related species as salmon. Once filleted and placed on a plate the two look very similar, but are completely different fish.

Salmon are born in fresh water but then live a good majority of their lives in the ocean. Salmon only return to fresh water to breed and then die. Rainbow trout live their whole lives in fresh water. These two are completely different fish.

There is a lot of fraud in China. The articles hint that much of what is sold in China as salmon has for years been rainbow trout, grown in aquaculture farms in Qinghai Province, far, far from the ocean. This fraud cheats Chinese people.

Toronto Map: Google vs Baidu Maps

I‘ve pretty much proved this, but in North America Google Maps is much better than Baidu. Here are maps from Downtown Toronto, near Bloor and East of Yonge Streets. Google Maps has actual street names and buildings. Baidu has only restaurants. Google’s satellite map is also really good. I could have also zoomed in for greater detail. Hands down, Google wins on English maps of Toronto.

pic.twitter.com/wcNwfQpyJr Google recently announced that it intends to return to the Chinese market through multiple channels, and the CCP official media also responded for the first time yesterday, welcoming Google to return to China, but must comply with Chinese laws. In response, six senators from the United States submitted an open letter to Google’s CEO, stating that if the plan to return to China is true, it will be deeply disturbing, and the CCP’s strict censorship system will lead Google to become an accomplice to human rights violations. pic.twitter.com/wcNwfQpyJr

Luo Jianbo: China’s Savior mentality is unacceptable, Essay

Infrequently there comes an essay from a high level Chinese government official that somewhat departs from the Chinese Communist Party line of thought. Authors of these essays must be very careful as such articles could, now or in the future, be used to investigate and or incarcerate. A fine balance is always required. This 2017.07.21 article by Luo Jianbo, the head of the China policy centre at the Central Party School, walks this fine line, and with eloquent writing. I hope that this essay will not be taken in the wrong way and result in his removal, or worse.

Chinese Surname Ying not in Chinese Character Set

Chinese character Ying, used in names, is not part of the standard Chinese character set. This would be a huge issue in China. Ying has a second, rising tone, or Ying2

Silly me I thought that the standard Chinese character set was, well, standard. In reality it is not inclusive to all Chinese characters. Friend David tipped me off to this article.

The Economist journo Zhang Ying wrote that her given name “Ying” had given her trouble in China. This character is not part of the Chinese character set for Ubuntu, nor can I find it online at MDBG.net

Chinese Tourist to New Zealand: Visa Requirements for Business Owners

My friend from China is going to visit Australia as a tourist and wishes to also visit New Zealand. She owns her own business. This makes it very difficult to get a New Zealand tourist visa, as thee is a requirement for business owners:

If you own your own company, we require the following:

  • Business licence with capital verification report
  • Statement about the business scope and the number of employees Recent business tax returns with income statement Recent bank documents showing daily business transactions

China’s Great Wall of Debt: Dinny McMahon, 2018, Book

-high rate of growth for 4 decades
-emphasis on growth: stimulate economy, short-term growth, pay for it down the road
-China uses foreign nations’ access to economy as political tool
-Beijing willing to intervene, postpone crash, possible greater pain down the road
-debt: why state firms, local govt borrowed so much, how fin systems accommodated, why technocrats allow it, why it has no solution

Walking around Shenyang China: Virtually

I am always up for a virtual map stroll through China. Today was Shenyang, where I tried to locate a shop. This is sort of like virtual geolocating. China is difficult to navigate because the maps are old on purpose, for security reasons. GPS locations are purposely skewed, also for security reasons. Even knowing Chinese, it is difficult to use a map to navigate China.

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response ASMR in China

This, is really weird. A girl whispers gently into your ear, and you get an immediate physical stimulus. I can hear her breath and sigh. She seems to not be talking about anything special. I am unsure if this is a sexual response, but I do experience some response. Very interesting, to say the least. You do need to know Chinese, I believe. This is the latest internet space that has been banned as anti-porn in China.
