Virgin Mobile Canada: New Home Internet Offer

Interested, I was, when I read a G&M article, written more like advertising copy, about Virgin Mobile offering home internet service, 300MB for $50/mo.

I went to their web site, input my address, which it acknowledged, but the lookup feature was not working. I therefore phoned and they confirmed that home internet is not yet available for me but is in the works.

They also confirmed that they will use Bell fiber optic lines, which were recently installed on my street, 300G bandwidth, 25mbps download, 15mbps upload. That is a lot cheaper than Bell is offering today.

Virgin Mobility Canada is wholly owned by Bell Canada.

Is this just another marketing ploy? Bell Canada’s packages are also changing. Bell’s Fibe 50 unlmited package has a promo price of $65/mo for 3 months, the same as the Virgin offer, after which it goes up to $80/mo.

Bell’s Fibe 25, 25mbps download, 10mbps upload, 125G bandwidth is $70/mo, $20/mo more expensive than Virgin and 175G less bandwidth. To top up your bandwidth will cost $25 more for an additional 125G, or $30 for unlimited. Topping up to 250G will cost $95/mo. This is almost double the price of Virgin, although they are the same company. They will both use the same fiber optic lines.

In price comparing Bell, be careful as they are really sneaky. They post 2 month limited time offer pricing in bold, and the regular price is further down. Bell also has an installation fee.

As most Canadians already know, do not trust RoBelus. Confirm and reconfirm everything.
