Spiralized Potato Shoestring Fries

Bought yesterday, I did, a Starfrit Spiralizer. Since Little Weed wanted to see how it worked his first choice, of course, was french fries.

I used the smallest shoestring blade, the spaghetti size, which turned out to be too small. Potatoes need a larger sized tube. It took only 8 minutes in my deep fryer but came out acceptably. There are shoestring french fry recipies out there that are baked rather than deep fried. I’ll try that next.

The Spiralzer was very easy to set up and use. The UI is simple. We took a medium sized white potato, lopped off one end, stuck it into the stationary pivot point, then jammed the other end into the rotating pointy end. Working rather like a hand cranked lathe, the potato turned, there is a flat blade that cuts a thin ribbon, which is then immediately cut by another blade into 4-5 separate strands. The outcome was professional and really looks, but does not taste, like pasta spaghetti. For the first try, I was impressed.

I also spiralized a cucumber, which also looks like pasta spaghetti. Topped with salad dressing it felt like I was eating pasta with a sweet sauce, but tasted like a salad! Sorry I did not take any photos as I was too busy eating.

The apple spiralized into very translucent wafer thin slices, but it did oxidize quickly. Little Weed liked the novelty of thinly sliced apple.

What I did not expect was that veg juice would flow everywhere. Still, the unit was easy to disassemble and clean. The blade has a handle at the top and you simply pull up. The rotating part pulls away and can be rinsed, as can the body. It is pretty easy to clean.

I hope to up the veg content of our family, go more paleo, and reduce the carbs a bit. That is the plan.
