Eat we do, eggs, all the time, especially Little Weed. He likes the one a day first thing. Eggs are a really concentrated burst of energy that I gladly provide him. Thusly, we go through a lot of eggs each week. NoFrills had a 30 flat pack on sale, but after checking the eggs for damage found that most of them had at least 1 cracked egg. The packaging is not a good design. I prefer the old style. Who wishes to buy cracked or crushed eggs? Not I.

NoFrills has a sale on a 30 egg carton for $5.00CAD. These Burnbrae eggs are in a flat pack in a 5×6 matrix. As I usually inspect my eggs before I buy I was surprised that almost every package had at least one egg crushed. I had to inspect at least 10 packages before I found one that was intact. The packaging of this 30 egg tray is not sufficient, resulting in breakage. This is not good, especially for an experienced egg producer.

I thought the eggs were on sale, as they were signed as such. The regular 12 egg packages that I usually buy had no price on it, and I had forgotten the price. It turns out I found an old receipt at home that had the regular dozen eggs at $2.00CAD, so the 30 egg carton was just regular price. Damn you NoFrills, for misleading me, but thanks for not cheating me.

Upon a quick inspection it was clear why there were so many cracked eggs. The protective recycled cardboard packaging only covered the bottom of the eggs but left the top of the eggs without support. On the plus side when you open the package it is easy to see what eggs are cracked or crushed because this happens more easily on the top.

Along with a lack of protection the flat pack form factor is not to my liking. I cannot store the eggs in my fridge door, like a 12 pack. In fact I had to go back into my garbage recycling container and fish out a used and empty 12 pack in order to properly store and protect the eggs in my fridge. That is not good. I still have 6 eggs left.

Such a bad package design by Burnbrae results in cracked or broken eggs means that their eggs are either unusable or had been prematurely exposed to outside air and bacteria. Why not do the right thing and proctet the eggs with a better design. In the end someone pays for this. If the consumer does not check the eggs at the store they receive inferior eggs. even if the consumer does check there is a risk that they will receive a cracked egg where the crack was undetected by a quick glance. NoFrills has to deal with the broken eggs and mess, possibly having to remove broken eggs and replace them with good ones. The hens waste their resources laying eggs only to have them cracked by a badl designed package. No one wins here.
