We humans need to do much better than this. My neighbour bought an RCA RFR322 student fridge, 3.2 cubic foot, Made in China, from Walmart. After a mere 5 months is stopped working. The manufacture of appliances such as a fridge takes a lot of natural resources, and if the appliance dies shortly after not only is it a waste of money but also of natural resources. We, as a species, need to stop making these mistakes.

Insulin is a Hormone that tells Cells to burn carbs and not Fat

This is an interesting theory, and a very minority one. The traditional theory is that obesity is caused by a person’s lack of will power, where if you don’t eat you won’t gain weight. This theory, the Carbohydrate-Insulin Model (CIM) of obesity, says that insulin is a hormone. When you eat carbs or sugar, insulin kicks in and tells your cells to burn carbs and not fat. You therefore crave more carbs and accumulate and not burn fat.

What is that high pitched sound on the street? It sounds like a large vacuum cleaner, and it was. The City of Toronto sewers were being cleaned by the sewer cleaning truck.

Skunks live in my neighbourhood, Toronto, Canada, though are not a common sight. We usually smell them first. Mostly blind, if they come close, just freeze and wait until they walk away. There’s really nothing to fear from skunks.

Due to their natural aroma, skunks have no natural enemies. They wander around at will, eating insects and plants, minding their own business. There is really no reason to kill one.

Our male crabapple tree blooms almost every year. It is a somewhat late bloomer, but reliable. The male tree does not produce apples, so the mess is much less. The blooms only last 4 days or so, maybe a week at the most, after which our whole back yard becomes a lake of pink leaves.

The reflection from the tree casts our rear rooms into a lovely shade of pink.

China: Worldwide Influencer, Mover and Shaker

China has a lot of people. Baoluan, 暴乱, is the Chinese fear of chaos, of the Government or Emperor losing control of their mandate to rule. The people, having little to lose, rise up and kick their overlords out. Today China’s overlords are the Chinese Communist Party. This recurring issue heavily colours what China does.

From China: They provide employment for their people

The solution in China is to give everyone work. With work they will not revolt and not upset the Communist Party, thus preserving the status quo: The Communist Party stays in power.

I bought a bag of naturally imperfect potatoes from my local NoFrills in Toronto, Canada, and many interesting shapes emerged. This is a great reason for me to buy more of these potatoes. These potatoes are not a perfect potato shape, so they were cheaper at 15lb for $2.50CAD. I saw a TV show about how farmers cannot sell imperfect potatoes because store chains reject them, and vowed to try them. I am glad I did. Unfortunately they are not readily available like other potatoes. I would buy more.

My neighbour’s tree dropped a large branch during a windstorm. A couple of days later the City of Toronto tree guys, called arborists, are here with their special truck and chipper to tidy things up.

Every spring the City of Toronto has their tree specialists, called arborists, that come around to inspect the city trees. These are trees that grow between the sidewalk and the street, called the boulevard. These trees are not owned by the homeowner. Any tree on the property of the homeowner is their responsibility.
