It is 2018 September 05 and Toronto is 34C!

Usually Toronto is moderately warm in June and hot in July and August. By the time September rolls around the weather cools down considerably. This was untrue this summer, where we have had a very hot June through to August. And today, on 2018 September 05 we are experiencing yet another super hot day. Wow. At least our PM2.5 air quality, at 55 moderate is not too terrible.

Unusually Hot 36C Weather: Toronto

It is very unusual for Toronto to exceed 35C temperatures. Anything above 30C and we simply stay indoors until the weather cools down. Today it hit 36C, with a low of 25C. That is really hot for us.

We are getting a good bout of freezing rain, as two storm fronts merge over the Greater Toronto Area. The first is warm and moist, from the Gulf of Mexico. The second is cold from the north-west. As they merge the warm one rises, dropping its rain. The rain goes through the cold front, which is lower than the warm front, chilling the rain. As it is below zero C the rain hits the ground and freezes. Freezing rain is very hazardous to walking, riding bicycles and driving cars.

This Year’s Crazy Summer Weather

The skies erupted in Toronto and tornadoes appeared just north of the city.

I am proudly Canadian. Canadians really like to talk about the weather, and I am no exception, In fact, many Canadians are quite knowledgeable about weather in general and can read weather maps with aplomb. While we usually respect weather forecasters, I am finding that this year’s summer weather here in Toronto is really not very accurate. More pointedly displayed by today’s freak tornado warning, they are getting really off base. Get a grip, you weather people, forecast better.

Snow Day, 20cm accumulation

A whole lot of snow has fallen in Toronto, and I’ve been shoveling once last night and twice today. While the temperatures are -4C and the snow is fluffy, it looks like around 20cm, which builds up and becomes heavy. It is not cold outside.

Icicles by security light

We have some icicles growing from various parts of the eavestrough that are melting, so there’s a constant drip, drip onto the snow outside. They will freeze solid tonight. The kids want them to eat, but they’re too high up and when you crack them off you don’t want to be underneath when they fall.
