Windows 10 Backup, Restore, Recover Options

There are a few Windows 10 backup options and they are a bit confusing. Some will work with a USB, while some will not.

Create a System Image: Windows 10 Image Backup
This option backs up your disk exactly as you have it. It takes the largest amount of space. I culled my Win 10 disk down to 51G and when I tried to create a system image it asked me for a disk no less than 72G! Also, this option will not let you use a USB key, so you’ll need a new disk. I had to format the USB key to NTFS, then used these instructions to create a network drive, on my Win 10 laptop, in order to trick it into accepting a USB key. In the end my 64G USB key was too small because Win 10 wanted 71G minimum.

Posting From Hub of All Things HAT to Facebook and Twitter

So here’s the deal. We, as citizens, post up on Facebook, or Twitter. A lot. Yes, a lot. When we log in and use their screens we give them permission to own our content and data. They can make money off it and resell it. Our data. They claim that it is now their data. Huh? How did it get from my life and finger tips to their ownership? What if you could own not only your own data but your own data’s database, just like your wallet? And from your wallet, you post to Facebook and Twitter. This means that you originally posted from your wallet, which you own. This means that the data, that is yours, that was originally stored in your wallet, that you own, is all yours. You keep it, you own it, just like it should be. Welcome to the Hub of All Things, or HAT.

Asus Aspire V3-571G Auto Upgrade to Windows 10: Not Easy

My dear Aunty has an Asus Aspire V3-571G-6602 laptop, Win7 64 bit, 500mb, 4G ram, 5 years old (2012/07/04), Windows 7. She only uses Firefox for her email and for browsing. Windows 10 auto-upgraded, she says, without her permission. Furious was an understatement, when, during the install, Windows 10 froze. No amount of rebooting fixed the problem. Her beloved PC, hardly used, was non-functional. Somehow I let it run and after a very long while it repaired itself and came back to life. Microsoft did not make a friend of my Aunty this week, but hopefully she may warm up later. In the meanwhile she is using my Lubuntu 14.04 on a 13 year old laptop, and she really likes it! I am contemplating installing a dual boot ‘buntu, which she will use on a regular basis, but if she desperately needs Windows she can have it as well.

Delta 36-510C Table Saw: DIY Table Fence

Delta 36-510C table saw has a terrible fence. The fence clamps to an inclined front area, resulting in an inefficient clamp, which moves when you use it.

I have had my Delta 36-510C table saw for quite a long time. The saw is inexpensive and I had very little money and needed a saw. Little did I know at the time that the table fence that came with the saw was terrible. I’d set up the fence, lock it down as tight as possible, and half way through a cut the fence would jiggle free and mess up my cut. I would end up with cut wood with dimensions slightly off at the end. After 15 years of suffering I decided to research and build a DIY table fence that works, is accurate and stays put despite the vibration of the saw.

Deepin Linux: What is the Deepin Name?

Deepin’s Chinese name is 深度科技 shendu keji. Shendu means “to a deep degree”, as in the pool is really deep. keji means technology. I suppose he took the deep part as the name.

cr.deepin.io resolves to 59.173.241.82, Chinanet Hubei. Wuhan is in Hubei province. Admin for that IP is in Wuhan, where Deepin is located.

I cannot determine Deepin’s security safety.

Russian Referrer Bot on 2017 Aug 31: 43 Unique IPs

I can only label this a Russian referrer bot because it uses predominantly Russian referrers, used for referrer spam. In fact I have no evidence of its origin. The list of 46 unique requesting IPs are from around the world, seemingly random. While it is easy to ban these 43, there is no way to find the originator of this bot.

Referrer spam is unique in that the originating IP does not care about returned data. All the IP request wishes to do is insert their referrer info into the request. This request goes back to and therefore affects and pollutes your Google Analytics. The requesting IPs, not wanting any information in return, could be from anywhere and could well be faked.

Rampant Online Ad Fraud and Bot Activity

Ad fraud software in action. Target website, randomized referrers, browser agents and proxy IP addresses. That is enough to spoof anti-bot software.

It is no secret that I battle and ban bad bots on my site. If a bot is not a well known search engine or provides me some type of service then I usually ban it. Sure it can visit my site, but it will receive a blank page. But why do they visit? Who is paying them? Welcome to the world of Online Ad Fraud.

Anatomy of an IDE Hard Disk Drive: Autopsy

This IDE Western Digital WD1200 hard disk drive, we have had, for a very long time. I do not even think it was mine, passed down by a well intended soul with a “Could you get it to work?”. Well, no. It dates back to 2002 and at 120G, made in Malaysia, was large at the time. Alas there was a clicking noise from the disk and it stopped working. All data was lost. I thought that Little Weed and I would do a father and son device autopsy, just for fun.

Manjaro Arch Linux Architect 17.0.2 Net Install for an Old Computer: Not so Easy

I have been trying to install the Manjaro Architect 17.0.2 OS, but have been getting only minor successes. This iso is not for the beginner. I have an old 14 year old circa 2003 P3 800 desktop, 500mb ram, which can currently run Puppy Tahr Linux as well as Debian 8 Jessie with the Enlightenment E17 desktop. I had originally wanted to load the Enlightenment E17 desktop, which I could not find. I was able to load E20, but it was far too slow to run. I deleted E20. Then I tried the minimal LXQt, which did not start. Now I’m having to reinstall Manjaro from scratch and will try to install LXQt from their disk.

Bohdi Linux Legacy 4.2.0 Installation Failure

It should have been easy. After all, I had successfully installed its base components on another partition, but no, it did not go well. I have an old P3 800, 500mb ram desktop of circa 2003 vintage, so 14 years old. Bohdi Linux is supposed to be a lightweight distro for old computers. It did not install very well on my old biddy.

Bohdi Linux 4.2.0 Legacy is 32 bit and runs on a base of Debian Linux 8 or 9, with an Enlightenment E17 desktop environment. On top of this Bohdi Linux packages things up, adds its own flavouring and spices, and is supposed to be a low spec distro. Here are its install requirements:
