Skipping Breakfast, or the Fasting 16-8 Weight Loss Diet

The standard practice is to eat breakfast every day. The saying “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” has been drilled into my tiny brain since birth. For me it just was not so important. Over the years I have deviated from this breakfast practice on many occasions, mostly without issue. I say mostly because I often inadvertently delay until well past lunch. This is the 16/8 fast, don’t eat for 16 hrs a day, but eat for only 8. It is not as radical as you might think, as most of the time you are asleep.

Dried Achiote Paste: How to Break It Down Back to Powder

Achiote paste: A unique Mexican flavour, but if it dries to a brick, is very difficult to break back down to a paste.

Big Weed had purchased this in California, as we do not have access to this here in Toronto. Achiote paste has a very unusual taste which I like. As I only used a half of the small pack I did not know to tightly wrap it so that it did not dry out. The result was a brick that was as hard as rock. Instead of wasting the achiote brick, which I cannot buy here in Toronto, I decided to try to break it down back to smaller chunks of near powder. This was more difficult than I thought.

China’s Salmon..Might be Rainbow Trout

China, for domestic consumption, recently decided to reclassify rainbow trout and related species as salmon. Once filleted and placed on a plate the two look very similar, but are completely different fish.

Salmon are born in fresh water but then live a good majority of their lives in the ocean. Salmon only return to fresh water to breed and then die. Rainbow trout live their whole lives in fresh water. These two are completely different fish.

There is a lot of fraud in China. The articles hint that much of what is sold in China as salmon has for years been rainbow trout, grown in aquaculture farms in Qinghai Province, far, far from the ocean. This fraud cheats Chinese people.

There are more than a few user interface errors on the NoFrills web site. Our family is a frequent shopper at NoFrills, the Canadian grocery store. Thankfully they are much better as a grocery store than they are at building and maintaining their website.

A couple of weeks ago they blocked me because I have an ad blocker. Really? I want to see your advertisement flyer, which is displayed on your site, and because I have an ad blocker you deny me the ability to see your flyer? Is not this counter-productive to my family buying from your store?

Fruit d’Or Cranberries: Unclear Country of Origin

We are particular with the country of origin of our food. If I don’t see it clearly on the package I hesitate, which usually means I put it back on the shelf. Fruit d’Or Cranberries almost did not make it to our home, even though these cranberries are grown and packaged in Canada, it does not explicitly state this on the package. Not only did I miss this, but my wife also missed it. Please, follow the industry standards and Government of Canada guidelines and state “Made in Canada” or “Product of Canada”.

Malaysian Garam Masala is located in Scarborough, Toronto, Canada at 1001 Sandhurst Circle 416-332-1922. It is in a small mall just East of McCowan and Finch.

They open from 16:00-01:00, so pretty late eating and only for dinner. There is an active KTV right beside them. We ordered the mee goreng and nasi goreng, both were very tasty. They take cash or debit, no credit cards. The feel of the restaurant is very laid back. Customers would help themselves to plastic glasses and water. Many would go to the back and talk to the cook while he was cooking. Most of the customers I saw were Indian, or at least browns.

Walmart Wastes Food that Customer Puts in Cart but never Bought

I was at my local Walmart today, in Toronto, Canada. Two customers in front of me was an elderly woman who had, in her cart a variety of soft goods items such as a small rug, a shirt, some toothpaste, but also some groceries such as eggs, and a 4L bag of milk. Unfortunately her credit card was denied, so she left her products at the checkout and walked away.

Buying Chocolate Truffles in China: Fakes Aplenty

A friend has asked me which French chocolates are best: Defeisi 德菲斯松露 or Feiluolun songlu 费罗伦松露. It was clear that she was confused and needed help. In providing her help it was clear that much deception occurs with Chinese suppliers and fakes are everywhere. As it turned out, neither are from France, and they may not be truffles, and one is only available from Chinese web site. These Chinese web sites are pretty sketchy. Add to this that Google search is unavailable in China, so Chinese people are not able to cross-check products, and the low level of English in China, makes it pretty easy to cheat Chinese consumers.

Fresh Butter Free Running Chicken: Chinese Lost in Translation

With our very large Chinese community here in Toronto, Canada, we have some pretty large Chinese grocery stores. Frankly I am surprised that there are so few Chinese to English translation mistakes. Here is one, from a local Chinese store flyer for Hong Tai Supermarket.

Canning Questions and Answers

A novice canner, I am, so in seeking out answers I am aptly qualified to document my findings. Canning is a food preservation method that uses heat and acidity to preserve foods into glass jars. These jars can stay almost indefinitely without refrigeration. In an age of computers and electricity I find this age old food preparation method quite enlightening. Yes, I am so easily amused.

Why Can?
You really do not use a can, as in a metal can. Canning uses glass bottles with a 2 part metal top: a seal and a ring. Interestingly these products are readily available at our local grocery stores and Walmart. it seems that many people still do can.
